The Cold Case of the Keddie Cabin Murders

On April 11, 1981, 36-year-old Glenna Sue Sharp, her 15-year-old son John, and his 17-year-old friend Dana Wingate were murdered in Cabin 28 at the Keddie Resort, in Keddie, California. It was discovered later that 12-year-old Tina Sharp was missing. Her remains surfaced years later. Before the Murders Sue Sharp and her five children—John, 15, Sheila, 14, Tina, 12, Ricky, 10, and Greg, 5—moved from Quincy to Keddie and rented Cabin 28 five months before the murders. On the evening of April 11, 1981, Sue had given the okay for Ricky and Greg to have their friend, 12-year-old Justin Eason, over to spend the night. Justin was also relatively new to Keddie. He had been living in Montana with his father, but moved in with his mother and stepfather, Marilyn and Martin Smartt, in November 1980. The Smartts lived in Cabin 26, which was just a short distance from the Sharps cabin. Letting Justin spend the night would not be a problem, but if it became one, Sue knew she could always send him home. Plus the house was fairly empty. Sheila had plans to go to a sleepover at a friends house. John and his friend, 17-year-old Dana Wingate, were going to Quincy that night, then coming back to hang out in Johns bedroom in the basement. Tina was over in Cabin 27 watching television, but came home around 10 p.m. The Discovery The following morning Sheila Sharp returned home at around 7:45 a.m. As she opened the door, she immediately noticed an offensive odor that seemed to engulf the room. When she stepped into the living room, it took her mind a moment to comprehend what her eyes were seeing. Her brother John appeared to be bound and lying on his back on the living room floor. There was blood caked around his neck and face. Next to John was a boy, bound and lying face down. It appeared that the boy and John were tied together at their feet. Her eyes then landed on a yellow blanket that was covering what looked like a body. Gripped by fear, Sheila ran to the neighbors while screaming for help. The investigation into the murders was initially handled by the Plumas County Sheriffs Office. From the start, the investigation was riddled with errors and oversights. To begin with, the crime scene was never properly secured. Even more astounding was the amount of time that it took for the police to realize that Tina Sharp was missing. When the first police officers arrived at the scene, Justin Eason tried to tell them that Tina was missing, but they ignored what the boy was saying. It wasnt until hours later that everyone realized that the 12-year-old daughter of the murdered woman was gone. The Murders Inside Cabin 28, investigators found two kitchen knives, one that had been used with such force that the blade was severely bent. Also found was a hammer, a pellet gun, and a pellet on the living room floor, which led investigators to believe that the pellet gun was also used in the attacks. Each victim had been bound with several feet of medical tape and electrical appliance wires removed from appliances in the home and extension cords. There was no medical tape at home before the murders, indicating that one of the attackers brought it in to help bind the victims. An examination of the victims was conducted. Sue Sharps lifeless body was found under the yellow blanket. She was wearing a robe, and her underwear had been removed and forced into her mouth. Also in her mouth was a ball of tape.   The underwear and tape were held in place with an extension cord that was also tied around her legs and ankles. Both Sue and John Sharp had been beaten with a claw hammer and stabbed multiple times in their bodies and throat. Dana Wingate was also beaten, but with a different hammer. He had been strangled to death. There was considerable blood on the living room floor, and drops of blood on Tinas bed. The investigation pointed to rape as the motivation behind kidnapping Tina, instead of murdering her in the home with the others. More evidence found included a bloody footprint that was discovered in the yard and knife marks in some of the walls of the home. The Investigation While the brutal attacks inside Cabin 28 were going on, Sues sons Ricky and Greg and their friend Justin Eason were sleeping undisturbed in the boys bedroom. The boys were found unharmed in the room the following morning after the murders.   A woman and her boyfriend, who were in the cabin next door to the Sharps cabin, were woken up at around 1:30 a.m. by what they described as  muffled  screams. The sound was so disturbing that the couple got up and looked around. When they were unable to determine where the screams were coming from, they went back to bed. It seems impossible that screams woke the neighbors, but did not disturb the boys that were in the same house where the screams originated. Also perplexing is why the killers chose not to harm the boys when any one of them could have been pretending to be asleep and later identified the perpetrators. A Possible Break in the Case The Plumas County Sheriffs Office questioned anyone who could have heard or witnessed something that could help solve the case. Among those that they interviewed were the Sharps neighbor, Justin Easons stepfather, Martin Smartt. What he told investigators made him a prime suspect in the crime. According to Smartt, on the night of the murders, a friend of his by the name of Severin John â€Å"Bo† Boubede was staying with the Smartts on a temporary basis. He said he and Boubede first met a few weeks earlier at the Veterans Administration Hospital, where they were both receiving treatment for posttraumatic stress disorder. Smartt claimed to suffer from PTSD as a result of his time spent fighting in Vietnam. He went on to say that earlier in the evening of April 11, he, his wife, Marilyn and Boubede, decided to go to the Backdoor Bar for a few drinks.   Smartt worked as a chef at the Backdoor Bar, but it was his night off. On the way to the bar, the group stopped in on Sue Sharp and asked her if she wanted to join them for drinks. Sue told them no, so they left for the bar. At the bar, Smartt complained angrily to the manager about the music that was playing. They left shortly afterward and went back to the Smartts cabin. Marilyn watched television, then went to bed. Smartt, still angry about the music, called the manager and complained again. He and Boubede then went back to bar for more drinks. Thinking that they now had a prime suspect, the Plumas County sheriff contacted the Department of Justice in Sacramento. Two DOJ investigators, Harry Bradley and P.A. Crim, conducted additional interviews on Martin and Marilyn Smartt and Boubede. During the interview with Marilyn, she told the investigators that she and Martin separated the day after the murders. She said that he was short-tempered, violent, and abusive. After the interviews with the Smartts and Boubede were completed and Martin was polygraphed, the DOJ investigators decided that none of them were involved with the murders. Marilyn Smartt was interviewed again at a later date. She told investigators that Martin Smartt hated John Sharp. She also admitted that early in the morning of April 12, she saw Martin burning something in the fireplace. Back to Justin Eason As time went on, Justin Eason began to change his story. He had told the investigators that he was asleep during the murders, as were the other two boys, and that he did not hear anything.   In a later interview, he described in detail a dream that he had where he was on a boat and saw John Sharp and Dana fighting with a man with long black hair, a mustache, and black glasses, who was carrying a hammer. The man threw John overboard, and then Dana, who he said was very drunk.   He went on to describe seeing a body that was covered in a sheet lying on the bow. He looked under the sheet and saw Sue, who had a knife cut in her chest. He tried to help her by patching the wound with a rag, which he ended up throwing into the water. In reality, Sue Sharp did have a knife wound in her chest. Another time, while being polygraphed, Eason told the polygrapher that he thought that he saw the murders. He said that a noise woke him up and that got up and looked through the door into the living room. He said he saw Sue Sharp laying on the sofa and that there were two men standing in the middle of the room. He described the men, one with black and dark glasses, the other with brown hair and wearing army boots. John Sharp and Dana came into the room and began arguing with the two men. A fight broke out, and Dana tried to escape out through the kitchen, but the man with the brown hair hit him with a hammer. John was being attacked by the man with the black hair, and Sue tried to help John. Justin said that this point, he hid behind the door. He then saw the men tying up John and Dana. He also claimed that he saw Tina come into the living room holding a blanket and asking what was going on. The two men grabbed her and took her out the back door as Tina tried to call for help. He said the man with the black hair used a pocket knife to cut Sue in the middle of her chest. Justin worked with a sketch artist and came up with composites of the two men. A Former Neighbor On June 4, 1981, investigators Bradley and Crim interviewed a man who lived in Cabin 28, but moved two weeks before the murders. He said he did not know the Sharps, but that three weeks before the murders he heard Sue Sharp and an unknown man yelling at each other. They continued to fight for another 30 minutes, screaming obscenities back and forth at each other. DOJ Investigators Get a Slap From the Locals When details of the interviews that Bradley and Crim had conducted with Martin Smartt and Boubede came to light, the Plumas County authorities were livid. Bradley and Crim were accused of sloppy work and failing to fact check or to pursue clarification for obvious discrepancies made by Smartt and Boubede. During the initial interview with Crim, BouBede said that he had worked as a Chicago police officer for 18 years, but retired after being shot while in the line of duty. This was an obvious lie which could have quickly been spotted had Crim paid attention to Boubedes date of birth.  Boubede lied about how long he had lived in Kiddie by adding two weeks to the time.  He said Marilyn was his niece, which was a lie. He claimed Marilyn was awake when he and Smartt came home after their second trip to the bar. Had anyone been paying attention, they would have caught that it contradicted what Marilyn said, which was that she was asleep when the two men came home. BouBede said he never met Sue Sharp, which contradicted what Marilyn said about the three of them stopping at the Sharp house and inviting her for a drink. Bradley and Crim showed a similar lack of energy when interviewing Martin Smartt. In one interview, Smartt said that his stepson Justin Eason might have seen something on the night of the murders, adding, without me detecting him at the end of the sentence. The investigators either missed the implications in Smartts slip up, or they werent listening. Smartt talked to the investigators about the hammers that used in the murder, adding that he had recently lost is own hammer. There were no follow-up interviews with Smartt or BouBede, since the investigators believed that the pair had no involvement in the murders. No longer a prime suspect, Martin Smartt moved to Klamath, California. Boubede returned to Chicago where he scammed several police officers out of money, was caught and almost did prison time, but died before being incarcerated. Tinas Remains In 1984, the cranium part of a skull was found about 30 miles from Keddie. Several months later an anonymous caller told the Butte County Sheriffs office that the skull belonged to Tina Sharp. Another search of the area was made, and a jawbone and several other bones were found. Testing confirmed that the bones belonged to Tina Sharp. The Butte County Sheriffs office gave the original and the backup copy of the recording from the anonymous caller to someone in law enforcement. Since then, both the original and the backup copies have disappeared. A Dead Mans Confession and New Evidence Martin Smartt died in 2000, and not long after his death, his therapist told the Plumas County Sheriffs Office that Smartt had confessed to him that he killed Sue Sharp because she was trying to convince Marilyn to leave him. Smartt never mentioned who killed John, Dana, or Tina. He also told the therapist that it was easy to beat the polygraph, that he and Plumas County Sheriff Doug Thomas were friends, and one time he let Thomas move in with him. On March 24, 2016, a hammer was found that that matches the description of the hammer that Marty Smartt claimed was missing two days after the murders. According to Plumas County Sheriff Hagwood, the location it was found... It would have been intentionally put there. It would not have been accidentally misplaced.

The Tell Tale Heart By Edgar Allan Poe - 951 Words

Power, Insanity and Guilt in The Tell-Tale Heart Even if one feels they may have gotten away with a crime, the weight of a person’s conscience cannot be concealed. In someone’s life, too much power and control combined with a person’s conscience in a person’s life can and will lead to an imbalance and perhaps insanity as in the short story â€Å"The Tell-Tale Heart†. Edgar Allan Poe demonstrates how the narrator in this story goes through the greed and need for control, leading to his insanity that results in extreme guilt. The narrator s desire for complete control, particularly of the old man and his evil eye which bothers him so much it leads him to commit his evil deed. He says that he did not have a motive for killing the old man†¦show more content†¦Poe provides many context clues through out The Tell-Tale Heart to suggest, that despite the narrator s assertions of sanity, that he is in fact insane. At the very beginning of the tal e, the narrator insists, â€Å"True! —nervous—very, very dreadfully nervous I had been and am; but why will you say that I am mad?† (Poe 1). The narrator s voice feels as if he is trying too hard to convince the reader of his mental stability, especially as he describes how careful he was to be nice to the old man the week before he carried out his plot to murder him. â€Å"I loved the old man. He had never wronged me. He had never given me insult. For his gold I had no desire. I think it was his eye! Yes, it was this! He had the eye of a vulture – a pale blue eye with a film over it† (Poe 1). A sane person would not be so scared of someone ones flaw so much that it drives them to take their life. The narrator can kill this man because he is insane and as he proudly describes what care he took to proceed with his murderous plot, the narrator come across as extremely unreliable, filling the reader with doubts of not only his veracity but also his me ntal stability. As the story unfolds, the narrator s actions further suggest his insanity. For example: sitting down on the mattress after he smothers the old man, hiding the body inside the house and his imagination of the still beating heart. Poe s cleverly constructed story clearly reveals the mind of a completely

IT Management Issues for Properly Store- myassignmenthelp.com

Question: Discuss about theIT Management Issues for Properly Store and Transmit. Answer: Introduction The significant application of various computers as well as systems to properly store, transmit, manipulate, collect and retrieve any type of data or information is known as information technology (Holtshouse, 2013). Information and communications technology is the major part of this information technology. Each and every type of operation that is solely related to the data or information can be well executed and simplified by the information technology. The most popular industries, where the information technology is used mainly include e commerce, hardware, software, internet, equipments related to telecom, transportation, semi conductors, electronics and many others as well (Pinto, 2015). In todays world, each and every organization or company is changing their business processes according to information systems or information technology. This report provides a summarised discussion on the popular and renowned taxi service, known as the BidTaxi. It is a type of bidding taxi and does not follow the traditional way of pick, drop and pay. The report will demonstrate a clear idea of the entire concept of this taxi service by properly outlining the various operations for business and providing three recommendations to improve the operations. Discussion Case Study Cab services or taxi services are the most important services in modern world. They provide assistance to those tourists or clients, who face problems in finding or exploring new places in a city, or are having issues in searching for public vehicles, or are having health issues (Laudon Laudon, 2015). The most significant advantages of this cab service are that they provide 24*7 services, are absolutely economic and affordable, saves time, scalable, flexible, provide professionalism and many more. BidTaxi is one of these taxi services. It is a special type of taxi service that does not follow the regular taxi features or characteristics in their services. The service that is followed by this particular taxi service is bidding. Bidding is done within ten minutes (Van Der Aalst, La Rosa Santoro, 2016). This particular taxis service has two basic formats. These two formats are present for the customers and the drivers. The format for the clients helps them to get registered with the a pplication and that for the driver helps them to connect with those particular clients, who are the sole partners of the application. Furthermore, there is no place restriction. The customers can book their taxi for going to anywhere they wish. They would be getting the probable estimated expense of their ride (Al-Mamary, Shamsuddin Abdul Hamid, 2013). Another advantage of this taxi service is that there is no fluctuation of expenses after the ride. Once the customer is booking a ride and gets an estimated expense, that particular expense is locked as soon as the client presses the confirm button. Moreover, the customer can track their journey throughout. This would again help them to feel secured in the total ride. The next feature of the taxi service is that only certified professionals are appointed as drivers and a monthly checking is done for the cars. It even enables a rating system for both client and driver and the rating appears in both profiles. Smart phones are not requi red for booking this service and even credit or debit cards are not at all mandatory for payments (Galliers, Leidner, 2014). Special discount offers are provided to regular customers to maintain customer loyalty. Business Operations The activity or action that is executed on a regular basis within a particular business to gain profit is known as a business operation. Each and every organization or company has its unique business operations for making the business successful (Zhao et al., 2013). The systems, people, processes and the equipments, which are required for making the business functional, are the most important parts of the business operations. These are the elements or components of business operation. There are various important business operations in the taxi service of BidTaxi. Each and every operation of the business is very efficient, scalable and flexible, when they are being compared to the other popular taxi services in the world (Jacobs, Chase Lummus, 2014). The most significant business operation in BidTaxi services is the flexibility of not requiring smart phones for the purpose of booking and credit or debit cards for the purpose of payment. Several types of information system are incorpo rated within this taxi service. These types of information system include MIS or management information system, TPS or the transaction processing system, AIS or accounting information system, ES or expert system and the DSS or decision support system (Bilbao-Osorio, Dutta Lanvin, 2013). Several important operations of business in the taxi service of BidTaxi are given below: Booking of Taxi: The first business operation of BidTaxi is the booking of taxi. The clients can easily book their rides through this application. This particular service provides all the professional drivers their clients (Schaper et al., 2014). These drivers would have the ability to choose their passengers through the process of bidding. The same kind of feature is incorporated within the service for the customers. Even they have the ability to choose their drivers for the ride. The expense is previously estimated before the ride is even started. They can choose the ride for lowest bid. Furthermore, all the passengers, who do not have smart phones, can be able to complete their booking through logging into their official website (Laudon Laudon, 2016). Payment is much easier and does not require any debit card or credit card. Techniques and Tools: Another important business operation of this taxi service, BidTaxi is the organized set of various techniques as well as tools, incorporated in the application. These techniques mainly involve estimated ride cost, estimated journey time, total distance, and route of the journey and driver details (Sennewald Baillie, 2015). This is given to the passengers and also the drivers. It helps in the completion of journey with safety. Verification of Identity Cards: The verification of the identity cards of both the drivers and the customers is done for the purpose of security and lack of authentication. The fake drivers and passengers are solely avoided in this manner. AIS: AIS is present with the application for making the payment system completed automatic (Holtshouse, 2013). The expense of their ride is estimated before the ride is taken. Thus, the client gets a clear idea how much money is to be required for the journey. The business operations help the taxi service for becoming popularity and successful in the market. The Ministry of Public Transportation has accepted this particular idea for BidTaxi. Three Recommendations Some of the features of BidTaxi need to be implemented. This implementation would help the taxi service to reach to the top level in the market. Three recommendations that are to be implemented within the application are given below: Connection of Wi-Fi: This is the very first recommendation for the taxi service of BidTaxi. The connection of the wireless fidelity would be helpful to the passengers in understanding and identifying their route completely. The detection of proximity is enhanced with the driver (Lloyd, 2017). Time management is another important advantage of Wi-Fi connection. The passengers would be able to search for their location by this connectivity. Moreover, Bluetooth could also be incorporated within the application. This would help the passengers to feel entertained in the journey. Quality Improvement: The second recommendation in this BidTaxi service is the quality improvement. The drivers should be properly trained for this particular purpose and thus the over quality is improvised (Schwalbe, 2015). The traffic regulations as well as the rules should be followed. Additional Services for Old Passengers: The final recommendation in BidTaxi is additional services for older passengers. The availability of taxis in the night time or odd hours is highly recommended for the service. This would help this business to be accepted by all. Conclusion Therefore, conclusion can be drawn that, the major use of several systems as well as computers to appropriately accumulate, spread, retrieve, manipulate and collect all types of information as well as data is called an information technology. ICT is the most important part of the information technology. All the kinds of information or data operations are well defined as well as by information technology. Moreover, it also simplifies the data structure. The most famous sectors, where this IT is properly utilized mainly involve telecom equipments, hardware, electronics, e commerce, semi conductors, software, internet, transportation and all others. In the modern technological world, all the companies are altering the processes of their business as per the information technology or information systems. The above report has properly provided a brief description on the very famous taxi service, called the BidTaxi service. This is a specific kind of taxi service that follows the procedure of bidding in its business. This type of taxi is not similar to the other types of taxi or cab services. The report has given a detailed outline of the several business operations in the taxi service and three typical recommendations for the successful improvement of the business. BidTaxi is a typical type of tax service that is well accepted by all types of passengers and clients. This particular taxi service follows the service of bidding in their business and does not follow the normal rules of taxi services. There is innumerable business operations incorporated with the system and these are exclusively important for their business (Holtshouse, 2013). Moreover, this is extremely safe and secured. Although, there are various advantages within the application of BidTaxi, few things are needed to be sorted in the business. Following are the two suggested improvement in the existing business operations in BidTaxi: Safety Measures Implementation: The first suggestion for the improvement in the business operations is the implementation of all types of safety measures. The most important safety measure in any taxi service is safe driving. Several kinds of distractions are possible in the road while someone is driving a car (Schaper et al., 2014). Professionalism is the most required characteristic in this type of business. Special training should be provided to the drivers for understanding road safety measures properly and are not distracted easily by any type of distraction on the road. Noises are the most basic kind of distraction for any driver. The navigation direction can also be a major distraction for the drivers and thus this is to be trained properly so that there exist lesser chance of accidents on road. Youth generation people are the most affected persons in this scenario. Time management is the most important requirement for the drivers (Zhao et al., 2013). Thus, this is also someth ing that should be learnt by the drivers of the application of BidTaxi. Moreover, there should a special type of examination for each and every driver in the application. This examination would help them to understand which driver is ready and which driver is not. The examination is extremely required for the taxi service. If the driver passes the examination, he is appointed as the driver in the company, however, if he fails, he is rejected or is sent to further training (Sennewald Baillie, 2015). The incorporation of this particular suggestion in the business would be diminishing the chances of road accidents to an extreme level. Furthermore, training will also be given on the basic skills of motor. Feedback from Driver and Customer: This is the next suggestion to the business operations of BidTaxi (Schwalbe, 2015). The feedbacks from the customers and the drivers are extremely required for the improvement of the business operations. As soon as the customer is dropped at his location, a feedback would be taken by the application that whether the ride was good or not. If the feedback is good, bonus points to be added to the drivers profile and if the feedback is bad, negative points are to be added to the drivers profile. Feedbacks from drivers are also required (Heizer, 2016). This would help the application to know more about driving and driving experiences. Thus, the overall application could be improved and be accepted by all. References Al-Mamary, Y. H., Shamsuddin, A., Abdul Hamid, N. A. (2013).
